Over 80,000 people infected with COVID-19 in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) — The total number of infected COVID-19 patients surpassed 80,000 in Sri Lanka on Monday after over 600 new patients were detected during the day, statistics from the Health Ministry showed here.

According to official figures, out of the 80,222 patients patients infected, 75,110 patients had recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 445 deaths had been reported from the virus.

Sri Lanka is presently facing a second wave of the COVID-19. It earlier last week rolled out a massive anti COVID-19 vaccination program after 500,000 doses of the Astra Zeneca vaccine arrived from India in the final week of January.

While the doses were initially administered to the frontline workers, it opened out to the general public last Monday.

Health officials said they had set up centers across capital Colombo to administer the jabs to the public and till Monday, over 300,000 people had received the vaccines so far.

The Health Ministry has urged people to maintain strict health guidelines and has made it mandatory to wear a mask and maintain social distance when visiting public places.
