BUENOS AIRES, July 23 (Xinhua) — Argentina on Friday reported 15,622 new cases of COVID-19 and 286 more deaths in 24 hours, raising the total caseload to 4,827,973 and the pandemic death toll to 103,359.

According to the Ministry of Health, active cases of COVID-19 total 259,627, with 4,358 patients in intensive care units (ICU).

ICU occupancy is at 58.5 percent nationwide and 56.3 percent in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area, which includes the capital and some 40 surrounding towns.

Argentina’s immunization campaign has administered 29,362,896 doses since December, after the Strategic Vaccination Plan was launched.

The country plans to vaccinate 12 to 17-year-old adolescents with health problems that make them vulnerable to COVID-19, after the European Medicines Agency authorized the use of the Moderna vaccine in adolescents, the ministry said in its daily pandemic report.

“This recommendation is a very important step in Argentina that will allow us to vaccinate, in a prioritized way, young people aged 12 to 17 with risk factors” totalling 900,000 people, Health Minister Carla Vizzotti said.
